5 Reasons why every young HR Professional should have a Mentor

by Alex Miller, Graduate Sutdent for the Human Resource Development Program at Villanova University

My name is Alex Miller and I am currently finishing my second year in Villanova University’s M.S. Human Resource Development Program. I was fortunate enough to participate in an annual mentoring program designed by the faculty of the Human Resource Development program. Each year, the program faculty selects current students and matches them up with seasoned HR professionals depending on experience and interests. The mentoring program provides graduate students with the opportunity to work with successful HR professionals and to continue to develop a range of skill sets. Mentors benefit by accessing fresh talent, improving their leadership skills and building a rapport with Villanova’s reputable HRD Graduate Program. I was lucky enough to be paired with an HR professional who shared similar interests within HR including employee relations, compensation, recruiting, and strategic HR. Listed below are 5 reasons why every young HR professional should seek a mentor.

Human Resource Development Internship & Mentoring Program

The Villanova Graduate Studies in Human Resource Development is constantly working to develop and support their graduate students and strengthen their HR network. With this mission in mind, the HRD program developed two resources for their graduate students. The first resource is the Villanova HRD Internship program. The Villanova HRD Internship program allows companies to gain access to a talented pool of rising HR professionals in the Villanova HRD Master’s Program. The internship program works as an online forum for employers to post available internships and for the students of the Villanova HRD Program to apply to them. The goal of the Villanova HRD Internship Program is to maintain a successful pipeline of talented students to fill internship positions within local companies. If you are an interested employer or current HRD student looking to join, please contact the Villanova HRD Internship team at Villanovahrdinternships@gmail.com.

The second resource is the HRD Mentoring Program. The HRD Mentoring Program was developed to help students transition from the academic world of human resources to a professional working environment. The mentoring program provides a list of suggested activities such as career path discussions, job shadowing, attending Villanova SHRM sponsored events, and development discussions. The goal of these activities is to encourage mentors and mentees to discuss current issues or trends in the field, enhance their professional networks, and exchange valuable ideas. It is encouraged for mentors and mentees to stay in contact with each other graduation and throughout their professional career.  If you are interested in participating in the HRD Mentoring Program please contact Dr. Katina Sawyer at katina.sawyer@villanova.edu.

HRD Mentoring Program

We are starting a mentoring program sustained by the community of VU SHRM and need your help!  We'll be matching mentors and mentees based on interest and experience to maximize your relationships and the benefit each participant receives, but first need to garner enough interest to begin.

We would like mentors to have at least 3 years exempt experience in HR, but if you feel like you are qualified enough and have less experience than that, make your case!  Mentors who participate and complete the program (from October 1st to May 1st) will be eligible to receive 5 HRCI Credits.

To those students in the campus Intro to HR class, being a mentee will also be a stellar addition to your portfolio!

Mentoring is a mutually beneficial relationship in which mentors are able to be satisfied as they see their mentee grow and succeed through their direction, while mentees get to learn some tricks of the trade.  Not to mention participating in a mentoring program as either a mentor or mentee looks GREAT on your resume or vitae!  This is an excellent opportunity to build connections within the program that will aid both mentors and mentees in endeavors beyond your classes and after graduation.

Please email Ali Yousaf (ayousaf@villanova.edu) by October 1st if you are interested in being a part of this exciting initiative, or have any questions.  Thanks and have a great day!
